First Grade

Welcome to the first grade website! In first grade, we work to build our academic and social skills while growing spiritually. In addition to our classroom curriculum, we attend Music, Physical Education, and Computer classes twice weekly. We also have weekly library time, and occasional field trips and guest speakers.

First Grade Notes:

Religion:
In first grade, we learn about how much God loves us!

Reading:
In Reading, we learn phonics and study high frequency words to develop word recognition skills. We use both fiction and nonfiction writing to build vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency as we strive to become better readers.

English:
We learn basic grammar and sentence structure, and complete several longer writing assignments using the writing process, including descriptions, personal narratives, research papers, etc.

Spelling:
We study letters, sounds, and spelling patterns. We have weekly spelling lists built around specific spelling patterns.

Handwriting:
We work on correct letter formation, as well as size, spacing, and slant.

Math:
We begin each day with a “morning meeting. We practice various math skills including counting, graphing, tallying, using a calendar, and more. We work on new skills together during our guided practice time and have time to practice skills independently too. Homework is part of our math curriculum several nights each week.

Science:
In Science, we have four units including Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology.

Social Studies:
In Social Studies, we learn more about culture, economics, geography, history, and citizenship.

Art:
In art, we work on basic concepts such as line and shape. We use various art media to create projects, pictures, and crafts.

Music:
In First Grade Music we will have lots of hands-on activities, including singing, movements activities, and playing music instruments. First graders will learn to identify basic rhythm notes, meter, and dynamics (loud/soft), among many other musical elements. They find playing the glockenspiels especially fun!
